Evidence supporting the use of: Saccharomyces boulardii
For the health condition: Diarrhea
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast that has been extensively studied for its role in the prevention and treatment of various types of diarrhea. Scientific evidence supports its use, especially in cases of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, traveler's diarrhea, and acute infectious diarrhea in both adults and children. Numerous randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated that S. boulardii can significantly reduce the duration and frequency of diarrhea episodes compared to placebo. Its mechanisms of action are thought to include inhibition of pathogenic bacteria, enhancement of the intestinal barrier, modulation of the immune response, and production of anti-toxin effects.
For antibiotic-associated diarrhea, several clinical trials have shown that supplementation with S. boulardii reduces the incidence and severity of diarrhea in patients receiving antibiotics. Meta-analyses published in peer-reviewed journals such as The Lancet Infectious Diseases and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews have concluded that S. boulardii is effective and safe in both adults and children. It has also shown benefits in reducing the recurrence of Clostridioides difficile infection when used alongside standard antibiotic therapy.
While S. boulardii is generally well tolerated, caution is advised in immunocompromised individuals due to rare cases of fungemia. Overall, the scientific validation for the use of S. boulardii in supporting and treating diarrhea is robust, with a high level of clinical evidence backing its efficacy for several types of diarrhea.
