Borassus palm (Borassus flabellifer), also known as the palmyra palm, has a longstanding history of use in traditional systems of medicine, particularly in South and Southeast Asia. Traditional practices, such as Ayurveda and Siddha, employ various parts of the Borassus palm—including its fruit, sap, and shoots—for a range of digestive complaints. These include acting as a mild laxative, soothing gastrointestinal irritation, and aiding in the management of constipation and indigestion. The fibrous pulp of the ripe fruit is consumed for its supposed cooling properties and is believed to help cleanse the digestive tract. However, the scientific evidence underpinning these traditional uses is limited. There are a few phytochemical studies indicating that Borassus palm contains dietary fiber, natural sugars, and certain phenolic compounds, which could theoretically contribute to digestive health. Nevertheless, there are few, if any, rigorous clinical trials evaluating its efficacy for specific digestive conditions in humans. Most available documentation comes from ethnobotanical surveys and historical texts rather than controlled scientific studies. As such, while the use of Borassus palm for digestive health is well-rooted in tradition, robust scientific validation is lacking at present.
