Evidence supporting the use of: Galangal
For the body system: Digestive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Galangal, a rhizome related to ginger, has been used traditionally in various Asian medicinal systems, especially in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, to support digestive health. Historically, it has been employed to treat indigestion, bloating, and stomach pain. In Southeast Asian folk medicine, galangal is often used as a remedy for gastrointestinal discomfort, believed to stimulate appetite and promote the secretion of digestive enzymes.
While some laboratory studies suggest that galangal may possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and gastroprotective properties, robust clinical evidence in humans is limited. Most of the support for its digestive benefits comes from long-standing traditional use rather than modern scientific trials. The compounds in galangal, such as galangin and other flavonoids, have demonstrated some biological activity that could, in theory, aid digestive processes, but these findings have not been consistently confirmed in human studies.
Therefore, although galangal is widely used in traditional medicine to support the digestive system, its efficacy for this purpose is not well validated by rigorous scientific research. The evidence for its use remains primarily traditional, with a moderate rating due to its long historical application and some supportive preclinical data.
