Blond psyllium (Plantago ovata) is a soluble fiber supplement commonly used to manage various gastrointestinal conditions. Its use in diverticulitis is primarily based on its well-established role in improving bowel regularity and stool consistency. While there is scientific evidence supporting the use of fiber in the prevention and management of diverticular disease, the quality and directness of the evidence specifically for blond psyllium in acute diverticulitis is limited.

Several guidelines, including those from the American Gastroenterological Association, recommend a high-fiber diet for patients with a history of diverticulitis to reduce the risk of recurrence. Psyllium, as a bulk-forming laxative, increases stool bulk and decreases colonic pressure, which theoretically may help prevent the formation of new diverticula and complications. However, during acute diverticulitis flares, fiber supplements like psyllium are usually not recommended until inflammation subsides.

Clinical trials specifically evaluating blond psyllium for diverticulitis are sparse, but studies on fiber supplementation in general show a modest benefit in reducing symptoms and recurrence risk. Therefore, the justification for using blond psyllium is supported by extrapolation from broader fiber studies rather than robust, direct evidence for this specific fiber source and condition.
