Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Curcuma wenyujin, a species in the ginger family, is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its properties in promoting blood circulation and resolving blood stasis. In TCM, dizziness is often attributed to blood stasis, qi stagnation, or phlegm obstructing the head. Curcuma wenyujin (known as "Wenyujin" or "Yujin") has been historically prescribed either alone or as part of herbal formulas to "invigorate the blood," "move qi," and alleviate symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, and chest pain. The rationale is based on the herb’s purported ability to unblock meridians and enhance cerebral blood flow, thereby reducing dizziness associated with vascular or blood flow disorders according to TCM theory.

There are few modern pharmacological studies specifically examining Curcuma wenyujin for dizziness. Most scientific investigations focus on its broader effects, such as anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and hepatoprotective properties. Some experimental research suggests curcumin derivatives may improve cerebral blood flow, but direct evidence for efficacy in dizziness in human clinical trials is lacking or indirect. Thus, the use of Curcuma wenyujin for dizziness remains primarily traditional, with some theoretical scientific plausibility but limited high-quality clinical validation.
