Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Earthworm (commonly referred to in Traditional Chinese Medicine as "Di Long") has been used historically in some traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia, for a range of conditions, including convulsions, high fever, and in some cases, symptoms resembling dizziness or vertigo. The use of earthworm is more often associated with its purported abilities to "clear heat" and "unblock channels" in TCM theory, which may loosely relate to symptoms like dizziness, but there is little specific traditional documentation directly linking earthworm to the treatment of dizziness as a primary indication. Modern scientific research on earthworm extract has focused on its anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties, but these studies are limited and do not directly address dizziness as a standalone symptom. There is no robust clinical evidence or randomized controlled trials supporting the use of earthworm for dizziness in contemporary medicine. Thus, its use for this condition is primarily based on traditional rationale rather than scientific validation, and even within traditional systems, it is not a primary or universally accepted remedy for dizziness.
