Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Flavonoid glycosides, particularly those found in plants such as Ginkgo biloba, have a long history of traditional use for managing dizziness and related symptoms such as vertigo. In traditional medicine systems, especially in Chinese and European herbal practices, extracts rich in flavonoid glycosides have been used to “support circulation” and alleviate dizziness. The rationale is based on the purported ability of flavonoids to improve blood flow, especially to the brain, which is thought to help with symptoms arising from poor cerebral circulation.

Scientific studies on the efficacy of flavonoid glycosides themselves for treating dizziness are limited, and most evidence is indirect. Some clinical trials involving Ginkgo biloba extracts—which contain both flavonoid glycosides and terpene lactones—have shown modest benefits in patients with vertigo and tinnitus, though the results are mixed and often attributed to the combined effects of multiple active constituents. Systematic reviews typically conclude that while there is some evidence for benefit, the quality of evidence is low and confounded by study design limitations.

Therefore, the use of flavonoid glycosides for dizziness is primarily rooted in tradition, with modest but inconclusive scientific support. More rigorous studies are needed to clarify their specific role and efficacy in treating dizziness.
