Evidence supporting the use of: Ginkgo Flavonglycosides
For the health condition: Dizziness
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Ginkgo flavonglycosides, derived from the leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree, are among the most studied phytochemicals for their effects on cognitive and circulatory health. Their use in treating or supporting dizziness—particularly dizziness associated with vestibular disorders and age-related circulatory insufficiency—has some scientific support primarily from clinical trials and meta-analyses.
Several randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have examined Ginkgo biloba extract (which is standardized to contain ginkgo flavonglycosides) for its efficacy in reducing symptoms of vertigo and dizziness, often in the context of chronic cerebral insufficiency or peripheral vestibular disorders. The proposed mechanisms include improvement in cerebral blood flow, neuroprotective effects, and antioxidant properties. For example, a 2012 Cochrane review concluded that Ginkgo biloba may have a beneficial effect in people with dementia or cognitive impairment, where dizziness is sometimes a symptom. Other studies, including a 2017 meta-analysis, have shown modest improvements in dizziness and vertigo symptoms compared to placebo, though results are mixed and often limited by study quality.
While the evidence is not uniformly strong and some guidelines call for more rigorous studies, the use of ginkgo flavonglycosides for dizziness is supported by a moderate amount of scientific research, particularly in Europe. It is commonly used in standardized extracts such as EGb 761 for this purpose.
