Evidence supporting the use of: Pearl
For the health condition: Dizziness
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Pearl (Zhen Zhu, 珍珠) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries, often as a calming agent and to "anchor the spirit." In TCM, pearl powder is traditionally prescribed to treat conditions such as palpitations, insomnia, and dizziness (often described as "vertigo" or "internal wind"). The rationale is based on the belief that pearl has a sedative effect and can help stabilize the mind and calm excessive "yang" or internal agitation, which are thought to cause symptoms like dizziness.
From a scientific perspective, there is very limited evidence supporting the use of pearl powder for dizziness. Some laboratory studies have explored the antioxidant and neuroprotective properties of components in pearl powder, but there is a lack of rigorous clinical trials directly assessing its effectiveness for dizziness or vertigo in humans. Most of the support for using pearl in this context is grounded in traditional usage and TCM theory rather than modern biomedical research.
Therefore, while the use of pearl for dizziness is well established in traditional Chinese medicine, the scientific validation for this application is minimal, and evidence is largely anecdotal or theoretical rather than empirical.
