Evidence supporting the use of: Brahmi
For the body system: Dopamine
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine as a "medhya rasayana," or brain tonic, traditionally believed to enhance memory, cognition, and mental well-being. While these traditional uses suggest broad support for mental and emotional health, explicit references to dopamine or the "dopamine system" are not found in classical Ayurvedic texts. There is some modern research exploring Brahmi’s effects on neurotransmitters, including dopamine, but evidence remains preliminary. Animal studies have indicated that Bacopa extracts may influence levels of dopamine and other neurotransmitters in the brain, potentially contributing to its anxiolytic and cognitive-enhancing effects. However, clinical trials in humans have primarily focused on cognitive performance and anxiety, with little direct evidence measuring dopamine activity. Therefore, while Brahmi’s use to support mental clarity and calm is well-rooted in tradition, the specific claim that it supports the dopamine system is mainly extrapolated and not robustly supported by either traditional doctrine or rigorous scientific validation. Its evidence rating for this specific application is therefore moderate to low.
