Citicoline (also known as CDP-choline) is a compound that serves as an intermediate in the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, a key component of cell membranes. Scientific research has investigated its effects on the brain, including its potential to support dopamine function. Several clinical and preclinical studies suggest that citicoline supplementation can increase dopamine levels in the brain, partly by enhancing dopamine synthesis and release, and protecting dopaminergic neurons from damage or degeneration.

For example, animal studies have shown that citicoline administration increases dopamine release in the striatum, a brain region heavily involved in motor control and reward. Human studies, though limited, indicate that citicoline may enhance dopaminergic activity and improve symptoms in conditions associated with dopamine deficiency, such as Parkinson’s disease and some cognitive disorders. Additionally, citicoline is thought to modulate neuronal membrane integrity and repair, indirectly supporting dopamine signaling.

However, while the mechanistic rationale and some clinical data are promising, large-scale, high-quality human trials are limited. Most of the evidence is preclinical or comes from small studies, and the degree of benefit in healthy individuals is less clear. As such, citicoline’s role in supporting the dopamine system is supported by scientific evidence, but the strength of that evidence is moderate rather than strong.
