Evidence supporting the use of: Robusta coffee
For the body system: Dopamine
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Coffea canephora, commonly known as Robusta coffee, contains higher levels of caffeine compared to Arabica varieties. Caffeine is a well-established central nervous system stimulant that has been shown in various scientific studies to influence dopamine signaling pathways in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter critical for motivation, reward, and mood regulation. Caffeine primarily acts as an adenosine receptor antagonist, which indirectly increases the release and activity of dopamine in certain brain regions, particularly the prefrontal cortex. This mechanism is believed to underlie some of the alertness, improved mood, and mild euphoria associated with coffee consumption.
Multiple studies have shown that habitual coffee consumption can modulate dopamine transmission and may be associated with a lower risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, which involves dopamine deficiency. However, most research has focused on caffeine in general rather than specifically on Robusta coffee. Robusta is considered particularly relevant because of its higher caffeine content. While there is a plausible biological basis and some supporting evidence for coffee’s dopamine-related effects, direct clinical trials on Robusta coffee and dopamine function in humans are limited. Therefore, while the overall scientific rationale is moderate, more targeted research on Robusta itself is needed to strengthen the evidence base.
