Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Artemisia herba-alba, commonly known as white wormwood, has a longstanding history in traditional medicine across the Middle East and North Africa, including use as a remedy for gastrointestinal disorders such as dysentery. Ethnobotanical surveys and historical texts indicate that various communities have used infusions or decoctions of Artemisia herba-alba to alleviate symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea, and intestinal infections. These traditional uses are attributed to the plant’s reputed antimicrobial and antispasmodic properties. Some in vitro studies have demonstrated antimicrobial activity of Artemisia herba-alba extracts against certain bacteria and protozoa, which could be implicated in dysentery. However, there is a lack of robust clinical trials or in vivo studies directly supporting its efficacy specifically for dysentery in humans. The available scientific evidence is limited and largely preclinical, and thus the primary justification for its use remains traditional. Overall, while the ethnobotanical and preliminary pharmacological data suggest a possible basis for its use, strong scientific validation is currently lacking.
