Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Aluminum hydroxide is widely used as an antacid to relieve symptoms of dyspepsia (indigestion). Dyspepsia commonly involves discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen, often related to acid-related irritation of the gastric mucosa. The scientific basis for the use of aluminum hydroxide lies in its ability to neutralize gastric hydrochloric acid. When ingested, aluminum hydroxide reacts with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form aluminum chloride and water, thereby reducing acidity and alleviating symptoms of heartburn and indigestion.

Numerous clinical studies and reviews support the efficacy of aluminum hydroxide, alone or in combination with magnesium hydroxide, in relieving dyspeptic symptoms. It is recognized in standard pharmacology and medical textbooks as a first-line, over-the-counter remedy for acid-related discomfort. Its onset of action is relatively rapid, and it is generally well-tolerated when used intermittently and as directed.

However, the evidence base is not without limitations. Most studies focus on symptomatic relief and short-term use; long-term efficacy and safety are less well-characterized. Furthermore, because aluminum hydroxide can cause constipation and interact with the absorption of other medications, its use is sometimes limited or combined with other antacids for a more balanced effect. Nonetheless, the overall scientific consensus is that aluminum hydroxide is a validated and effective option for treating dyspepsia related to gastric acidity.
