Traditional texts and ethnobotanical surveys frequently mention anise seeds as a carminative—an agent that reduces gas formation in the gastrointestinal tract and relieves bloating, flatulence, and mild cramping. Preparations such as teas, tinctures, and powders have been employed to ease discomfort after meals and promote healthy digestion.
Scientific validation for its use in dyspepsia is limited, but some laboratory and small human studies suggest that anise’s essential oils, particularly anethole, may possess antispasmodic and mild prokinetic effects, potentially contributing to its digestive benefits.
