Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Arecoline Hydrobromide is primarily used in traditional medicine to support or treat dyspepsia (indigestion), rather than being supported by robust scientific validation. Arecoline is an alkaloid derived from the areca nut (betel nut), which has a long history of use in traditional Asian medicine. It is known to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to increased secretion of saliva and gastric juices, which is thought to aid digestion. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, arecoline and its salts (such as hydrobromide) were included in western pharmacopeias as gastrointestinal stimulants and vermifuges, largely based on empirical observation and traditional use rather than controlled clinical trials. However, modern scientific studies evaluating its efficacy for dyspepsia are lacking.

Current pharmacological research on arecoline focuses more on its neurological effects and potential toxicity than on its gastrointestinal benefits. There is little to no recent clinical evidence to validate its use for dyspepsia, and concerns about toxicity (especially carcinogenicity and neurotoxicity) have led to decreased medicinal use. Therefore, the evidence supporting the use of Arecoline Hydrobromide for dyspepsia is largely traditional, with a low level of supporting evidence.
