Basil (Ocimum basilicum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and Unani, particularly for digestive complaints including dyspepsia (indigestion). Traditional practitioners have recommended basil leaves or extracts to alleviate symptoms such as bloating, gas, and stomach discomfort. The rationale is typically based on basil’s carminative (gas-relieving) properties, its purported ability to soothe the digestive tract, and its mild antispasmodic effects.
Some historical texts cite the use of basil tea or chewed fresh leaves to provide relief from indigestion and to stimulate appetite. The essential oils in basil, such as eugenol, linalool, and methyl chavicol, are believed to contribute to its digestive benefits by reducing gut spasms and aiding in gastric motility.
However, while a few small laboratory and animal studies have indicated that basil extracts may have antispasmodic or anti-inflammatory effects on the gastrointestinal system, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking.
