Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) has a long history of traditional use in European herbal medicine, including for digestive complaints such as dyspepsia (indigestion). The berries and leaves have been used in folk remedies for various gastrointestinal issues, with anecdotal reports suggesting benefits for mild stomach upset and improvement of digestive comfort. Traditional herbal texts such as the German Commission E Monographs mention bilberry mainly for diarrhea rather than for dyspepsia specifically. The rationale for its use in digestive disorders is often attributed to the astringent properties of its tannins, which may help reduce irritation of the digestive tract.

However, direct scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of bilberry for dyspepsia is limited. Most modern research on bilberry focuses on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vascular effects, especially regarding eye health and circulation.
