Clerodendrum indicum (commonly known as Turk’s Turban or Bhant in Ayurveda) is primarily used in traditional medicine for the management of dyspepsia (indigestion) and related gastrointestinal disorders. In Ayurvedic and folk practices, various parts of the plant, especially the roots and leaves, are used to prepare decoctions meant to alleviate symptoms such as bloating, loss of appetite, and discomfort after eating. The rationale for its use in dyspepsia is rooted in its reputed carminative, stomachic, and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to help regulate digestion and reduce gastrointestinal irritation.

While traditional texts such as the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India mention its benefits in digestive complaints, there is limited scientific validation to support these claims. Some preliminary studies have shown that extracts from Clerodendrum indicum possess antioxidant and mild anti-inflammatory effects, which could theoretically provide symptomatic relief in dyspepsia. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence remains anecdotal or based on animal models.
