Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Indian Gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica, commonly known as amla) has a long-standing place in traditional Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine for the management of digestive disorders, including dyspepsia. In Ayurveda, amla is regarded as an important “rasayana” herb believed to balance stomach acid, improve digestion, and reduce gastric discomfort. Historical Ayurvedic texts recommend amla for “agnimandya” (digestive weakness) and related symptoms of dyspepsia, such as bloating and indigestion.

Scientific research partially supports these traditional uses. Some small animal and in vitro studies suggest that extracts of Indian Gooseberry may possess gastroprotective, antioxidant, and mild prokinetic properties. For example, experimental models have demonstrated that amla can increase mucosal defenses in the stomach and inhibit gastric ulcer formation, which could theoretically benefit dyspepsia. However, high-quality human clinical trials specifically evaluating its efficacy for dyspepsia are limited. A few small, uncontrolled or preliminary clinical studies suggest possible improvements in symptoms of indigestion, but these are insufficient for strong scientific validation.

In summary, the use of Indian Gooseberry for dyspepsia is primarily justified by traditional use, with a modest level of supporting evidence from laboratory and animal studies, and very limited but encouraging early clinical data.
