Myrobalan, particularly the fruits of Terminalia chebula (commonly called Haritaki), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Unani for the treatment of digestive complaints, including dyspepsia (indigestion). Texts in Ayurveda describe Haritaki as a "rasayana" or rejuvenating herb, and it is often used to promote digestive health, stimulate appetite, and ease bloating and discomfort associated with dyspepsia. The fruit is believed to possess mild laxative, carminative, and stomachic properties, which are thought to help normalize digestion and relieve symptoms such as fullness, gas, and mild stomach pain.

While there are some preliminary laboratory and animal studies suggesting that extracts of myrobalan may have gastroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects, robust clinical evidence in humans for its efficacy in treating dyspepsia is limited. Most of the support for its use comes from traditional practice and anecdotal reports, rather than from large, well-conducted clinical trials.
