Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium) has a long-standing history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly by Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest and later by European herbalists. It has been employed as a bitter tonic to stimulate digestion and relieve symptoms associated with dyspepsia (indigestion), such as bloating, poor appetite, and mild stomach discomfort. The roots and bark contain alkaloids, primarily berberine, which have been thought to promote bile flow and improve digestive processes. Historical herbal texts from the 19th and early 20th centuries often recommend Oregon grape for sluggish digestion and liver complaints.
However, scientific evidence supporting Oregon grape’s efficacy for dyspepsia is limited. Most modern research focuses on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective properties, not specifically on its effects in treating dyspepsia. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest berberine and related compounds can stimulate bile secretion and support liver function, potentially aiding digestion, but controlled human clinical trials for dyspepsia are lacking.
