Evidence supporting the use of: Patrinia
For the health condition: Dyspepsia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Patrinia (commonly referring to species such as Patrinia scabiosaefolia and Patrinia villosa) has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly within Chinese herbal medicine, for the treatment of digestive complaints including dyspepsia (indigestion). In classical Chinese medicine texts, Patrinia (known as "Bai Jiang Cao" in Chinese) is described as having properties that "clear heat," "remove toxicity," and "resolve abscesses," but it is also used in herbal formulas aimed at alleviating abdominal pain, bloating, and other gastrointestinal symptoms commonly associated with dyspepsia.
Despite its frequent inclusion in traditional formulations for digestive disorders, there is very limited modern scientific evidence to substantiate its efficacy specifically for dyspepsia. While some pharmacological studies have noted anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of Patrinia extracts, as well as potential effects on the gastrointestinal tract (such as modulating gut motility or reducing gut inflammation), clinical trials in humans focusing on dyspepsia are lacking or of low quality. Therefore, the use of Patrinia for dyspepsia is justified by traditional practice and historical usage rather than robust scientific validation.
