Phellodendron amurense, also known as Amur cork tree, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It is one of the key ingredients in the traditional formula known as "Huang Bai," which is used to clear heat and dry dampness. Dyspepsia, or indigestion, is often attributed in TCM to "damp-heat" in the stomach or intestines, and Phellodendron is included in various herbal formulas intended to address these symptoms. While Phellodendron is not specifically cited as a primary remedy for dyspepsia in classic TCM texts, its role in formulas targeting gastrointestinal discomfort, inflammation, and infections can indirectly support its traditional use for dyspeptic complaints. The bark contains alkaloids such as berberine, which have demonstrated antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities in laboratory studies, lending some mechanistic rationale. However, there is a lack of high-quality clinical trials directly evaluating its efficacy for dyspepsia in modern scientific literature. As a result, the use of Phellodendron amurense for dyspepsia is best characterized as traditional, with modest evidence from historical practice and only preliminary pharmacological support from laboratory studies, but limited clinical validation.
