Evidence supporting the use of: Premna
For the health condition: Dyspepsia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Premna, particularly species such as Premna serratifolia, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and folk practices across South and Southeast Asia. Traditionally, Premna leaves and roots are used as digestive aids, and preparations such as decoctions or powders are administered to alleviate symptoms of dyspepsia (indigestion). Classical Ayurvedic texts describe Premna (known as "Agnimantha") as having deepana (appetizer) and pachana (digestive) properties, recommending it for conditions involving weak digestion, bloating, and abdominal discomfort.
There is, however, limited modern scientific research specifically validating Premna’s efficacy in treating dyspepsia. Some in vitro and animal studies have shown that extracts from Premna species possess mild anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and spasmolytic properties, which could theoretically support digestive health and symptom relief. Nonetheless, clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies in humans targeting dyspepsia are lacking. Thus, while its use is well-established and justified in traditional practice, scientific validation remains preliminary and insufficient for strong evidence-based endorsement.
