Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rice has traditionally been used in many cultures to support digestive health and alleviate dyspepsia (indigestion). In systems like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, rice—especially when prepared as a soft, watery porridge (such as congee or rice gruel)—is considered gentle on the stomach and easy to digest. The bland nature of rice, its low fiber content (when white rice is used), and its ability to absorb excess gastric acid are often cited as reasons for its use in calming digestive upset. Rice porridge is a common home remedy for people experiencing nausea, bloating, or mild stomach discomfort, particularly in East and South Asian households.

However, the scientific evidence directly supporting rice as a treatment for dyspepsia is limited. Some studies suggest that low-fat, low-fiber, bland diets (which include white rice) may help reduce gastric irritation and improve symptoms in people with functional dyspepsia or after episodes of gastroenteritis. The gentle nature of rice means it is less likely to exacerbate symptoms like bloating or pain compared to more complex or fatty foods. Nonetheless, clinical trials specifically evaluating rice for dyspepsia are lacking, and most recommendations are based on clinical experience and tradition rather than robust scientific data.

In summary, rice’s use in dyspepsia is primarily traditional, with some indirect scientific rationale but minimal direct high-quality evidence.
