Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sedanenolide is a phthalide compound found primarily in the roots of Ligusticum species such as Ligusticum chuanxiong and Ligusticum sinense. These plants have been used in traditional Chinese and East Asian medicine, often for their purported benefits in promoting digestion and relieving symptoms associated with dyspepsia (indigestion). The use of these herbs in dyspepsia is largely based on empirical tradition and is mentioned in historical materia medica texts. Sedanenolide itself is believed to contribute to the characteristic aroma and, possibly, some of the bioactivity of these plants.

However, scientific evidence directly supporting the use of sedanenolide for dyspepsia is minimal. While there are some studies exploring the pharmacological effects of Ligusticum extracts—such as mild antispasmodic or smooth muscle relaxant effects, which could theoretically ease gastrointestinal discomfort—there are no robust clinical trials or mechanistic studies that isolate sedanenolide as the active agent for dyspepsia treatment. As a result, the justification for using sedanenolide in dyspepsia remains rooted in traditional practice rather than scientific validation.
