Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, for various digestive ailments including dyspepsia (indigestion). More recently, scientific studies have started to investigate and validate some of these traditional uses. The active component of turmeric, curcumin, is thought to exert anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and choleretic (bile-stimulating) effects, which may contribute to improved digestive function and symptom relief in dyspepsia.

Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses provide moderate evidence for turmeric’s efficacy in managing functional dyspepsia. For instance, a 2019 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found that turmeric extract significantly improved dyspeptic symptoms compared to placebo. Another meta-analysis published in 2020 concluded that curcumin was effective in reducing symptoms of functional dyspepsia, with a safety profile comparable to placebo. The proposed mechanisms include stimulation of bile production, reduction of gut inflammation, and modulation of gut microbiota.

While these studies provide promising results, limitations such as small sample sizes, short durations, and variability in dosing and formulations mean the overall evidence is rated moderate (3/5). More large-scale and long-term clinical trials are needed for stronger recommendations. Nevertheless, turmeric is recognized as a potentially beneficial adjunct or alternative for people with dyspepsia, especially those seeking herbal or non-pharmaceutical options.
