Evidence supporting the use of: Centipeda
For the health condition: Ear Infection or Earache
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Centipeda, particularly the species Centipeda minima, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Chinese and Australian Aboriginal medicine. Traditionally, Centipeda is known as "E Bu Shi Cao" in Chinese medicine and has been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments, including nasal congestion, rhinitis, and ear conditions such as earache and infection. The rationale for its use in ear conditions is primarily based on its reputed anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which are thought to help reduce pain and combat infection. However, scientific validation of these uses is limited. There are a few in vitro and animal studies demonstrating that extracts of Centipeda minima may possess anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities, but direct clinical evidence for its effectiveness in treating human ear infections or earache is lacking. Most contemporary uses for ear conditions are derived from traditional herbal formulations rather than from robust clinical research. As such, while the use of Centipeda for ear infection or earache is supported by tradition, there is insufficient high-quality scientific evidence to strongly recommend its use for this indication.
