Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chamomile has a long history of use in traditional medicine for various ailments, including ear infections and earaches. In folk remedies, chamomile is sometimes applied topically as an infusion, oil, or poultice to the ear (externally), or chamomile tea is consumed to help alleviate discomfort. Herbalists and traditional healers have recommended chamomile for its reputed anti-inflammatory, mild analgesic, and soothing properties, which are believed to help reduce the pain and irritation associated with earaches. However, there is little to no robust clinical evidence from well-designed human studies supporting the efficacy of chamomile for ear infections or earache. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest chamomile extracts possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities, but these findings have not been directly translated into proven treatments for ear infections. Major health organizations and clinical guidelines do not recommend chamomile as a standard or adjunctive therapy for ear infections. Therefore, while its use is rooted in tradition, scientific validation for chamomile's effectiveness for this condition is lacking.
