Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Pluchea, particularly Pluchea indica and Pluchea odorata, has a long history of use in various traditional medicine systems, especially in Southeast Asia and parts of Central and South America. Traditionally, the leaves and other parts of the plant have been employed as remedies for a variety of ailments, including inflammation, fever, and pain. In the context of ear infections or earache, ethnobotanical surveys and traditional medical texts occasionally mention the use of Pluchea preparations—often as topical poultices or decoctions—applied around the ear or used in steam inhalation to relieve pain and inflammation. However, these uses are rooted in folk practices rather than in rigorous clinical validation.

Current scientific literature provides little to no direct evidence supporting the efficacy of Pluchea for the treatment of ear infections (otitis) or earache. While some studies have identified anti-inflammatory and mild analgesic properties in Pluchea extracts, these findings have not been specifically linked to ear health or validated in clinical trials for otitis or ear pain. As such, the evidence for its use in ear infections is almost entirely traditional and anecdotal, with a low evidence rating due to the absence of controlled studies.
