Evidence supporting the use of: Solanum indicum
For the health condition: Ear Infection or Earache
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Solanum indicum, commonly known as Indian nightshade or "Brihati" in Ayurveda, has been traditionally used in Indian and other South Asian systems of medicine for various ailments, including ear infections and earaches. Classical Ayurvedic texts, such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, mention the use of Solanum indicum, either as a decoction or in oil preparations, as a remedy for ear pain and related inflammatory conditions. The traditional application usually involves warming the juice or oil extract and instilling it into the ear to alleviate discomfort and potentially reduce infection.
However, scientific validation of this practice is limited. While Solanum indicum is known to possess anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial properties based on in vitro and some animal studies, there is scant direct evidence or clinical research specifically evaluating its effectiveness for ear infections (otitis) or earache in humans. The use for this indication remains rooted in ethnobotanical and historical practice rather than supported by rigorous scientific studies or clinical trials. Therefore, while the tradition of using Solanum indicum for ear complaints is well established, the evidence base is weak, and its effectiveness for this indication has not been robustly demonstrated in modern scientific literature.
