Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cicada (specifically, the slough or molted exoskeleton of the cicada, known as Chantui in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has been used for centuries in East Asian herbal practices. It is traditionally used to "dispel wind-heat," and is most commonly prescribed for conditions such as sore throat, hoarseness, and rashes. Importantly, Chantui is frequently included in formulations for ear-related conditions, such as tinnitus (ringing in the ears), sudden hearing loss, and especially for relieving acute or chronic otitis media (middle ear inflammation) and ear congestion. The justification for its use is mainly based on the traditional belief that cicada slough helps to "clear the exterior" and "open the orifices," which in TCM theory is interpreted as benefiting the sensory organs, including the ears. However, there is minimal modern scientific validation for these uses. Most available literature and clinical studies focus on its historical application and pharmacological properties such as anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effects. No high-quality clinical trials have confirmed its efficacy for ear conditions. The evidence rating is therefore moderate for traditional use, but low for scientific support. As such, cicada slough is used to support the ear system primarily on the basis of tradition rather than robust scientific evidence.
