Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacterium breve
For the health condition: Eczema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bifidobacterium breve has been investigated for its potential benefits in managing eczema, particularly atopic dermatitis, primarily in infants and children. Scientific interest in the use of probiotics such as B. breve for eczema stems from the "hygiene hypothesis" and growing evidence that the gut microbiota plays an important role in immune system development and regulation. Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews have examined the efficacy of B. breve, either alone or in combination with other probiotic strains, for the prevention or treatment of eczema.
While some studies have reported modest reductions in the incidence or severity of eczema with B. breve supplementation, the overall body of evidence is mixed. For example, a 2017 double-blind RCT found that a mixture containing B. breve reduced the risk of eczema in high-risk infants, but other trials have failed to show significant benefit. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews, including Cochrane reviews, generally conclude that although certain probiotic strains may offer small benefits, the evidence is not strong or consistent enough to recommend routine use of B. breve for eczema prevention or treatment. Variability in strains, dosages, study populations, and study designs further complicates interpretation.
In summary, there is some scientific evidence supporting the use of B. breve for eczema, but the strength of the evidence is low to moderate, and routine clinical use is not yet widely endorsed by guidelines.
