Evidence supporting the use of: Chamomile (unspecified)
For the health condition: Eczema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chamomile has a long history of traditional use for skin conditions such as eczema. Historically, both Roman and German chamomile preparations have been applied topically to soothe irritated skin and reduce inflammation. The traditional rationale is based on chamomile's anti-inflammatory, calming, and mildly antimicrobial properties, which have been recognized in European herbal medicine for centuries. Some small clinical studies and laboratory investigations have suggested that chamomile extracts may inhibit inflammation and promote skin barrier repair, but the quality and size of the studies are limited. For example, a small randomized trial found chamomile cream to be as effective as hydrocortisone in treating mild eczema, but the sample size was too limited for definitive conclusions, and subsequent studies have not consistently replicated these results. Major dermatological guidelines do not currently recommend chamomile as a primary treatment for eczema due to insufficient robust clinical evidence. However, some patients may experience symptomatic relief from topical chamomile preparations, especially if they prefer natural remedies. Allergic reactions, though rare, are possible, particularly in individuals with sensitivities to plants in the Asteraceae family. In summary, while chamomile is traditionally used for eczema and there is some low-quality evidence to support its soothing properties, strong scientific validation is lacking.
