Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Fatty acids, particularly omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, have been studied for their potential role in supporting or treating eczema (atopic dermatitis). Scientific interest stems from the role of fatty acids in modulating inflammation and maintaining skin barrier function, which are both relevant in eczema pathogenesis. Some studies have found that dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids (such as those found in fish oil) or omega-6 fatty acids (such as gamma-linolenic acid from evening primrose oil or borage oil) may result in modest improvements in eczema symptoms. For example, a 2018 Cochrane review of oral evening primrose oil and borage oil found little to no difference compared to placebo, though individual studies sometimes reported minor benefit.

Other research has explored the topical application of fatty acid-rich oils, with mixed results. While some small trials have shown improvements in skin hydration and symptom relief, the overall evidence remains inconsistent and often of low quality. Systematic reviews generally conclude that while fatty acids have a plausible biological mechanism and some limited positive findings, the clinical effectiveness for eczema is not firmly established.

In summary, there is some scientific basis for the use of fatty acids in eczema, but the overall evidence is weak to moderate, resulting in a low to moderate rating. More high-quality, large-scale clinical trials are needed to determine efficacy and optimal usage.
