Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium) is used in the management of eczema primarily due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. The scientific validation for its use comes from several small clinical studies and pharmacological investigations. The active compounds in Oregon grape, especially berberine, have shown anti-inflammatory effects that may help alleviate the symptoms of eczema, such as redness, itching, and irritation.

One randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (2005) found that a topical cream containing Oregon grape extract significantly improved mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (a form of eczema) compared to placebo. Other studies have demonstrated its ability to inhibit the proliferation of keratinocytes (skin cells) and reduce inflammation, both of which are relevant in eczema pathophysiology. Additionally, Oregon grape’s antimicrobial properties may help reduce secondary bacterial infections often seen in eczema patients.

However, while results are promising, the evidence base is limited by the small scale of most studies, and more large, high-quality clinical trials are needed. Despite this, Oregon grape creams and ointments are available over the counter in some countries and are recommended by some dermatologists as adjunctive therapy. Overall, its use for eczema has a moderate level of scientific support, particularly for topical application.
