Several scientific studies suggest that prebiotic blends may have a supportive role in the management of eczema, particularly in infants and children. Prebiotics are non-digestible fibers that serve as food for beneficial gut bacteria, helping to modulate the composition and activity of the gut microbiome. Dysbiosis (an imbalance in gut bacteria) has been associated with the development and severity of atopic dermatitis (eczema). The rationale is that by promoting a healthier gut microbiota, prebiotics may help modulate immune responses and reduce inflammation, potentially alleviating eczema symptoms.
Randomized controlled trials, such as those using galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), have shown a modest reduction in the incidence or severity of eczema in high-risk infants given prebiotic-supplemented formula compared to standard formula. However, these effects are generally small, and not all studies have found significant benefits. The European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) notes that evidence is insufficient to recommend routine prebiotic supplementation for eczema prevention, but acknowledges some studies suggest a benefit in high-risk populations.
