Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Terpenoids, a large and diverse class of naturally occurring organic chemicals derived from terpenes, are found in many plants and are known for their aromatic properties and potential therapeutic benefits. In the context of eczema (atopic dermatitis), there is emerging but limited scientific evidence supporting the use of certain terpenoids, such as beta-caryophyllene, linalool, and alpha-pinene, for their anti-inflammatory and skin barrier-supporting effects. Some preclinical studies (in vitro and animal models) have demonstrated that specific terpenoids can reduce inflammation, modulate immune responses, and support skin healing by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress—mechanisms relevant to eczema pathogenesis.

However, clinical evidence in humans remains sparse. A few small-scale clinical trials and case reports suggest that topical formulations containing terpenoid-rich essential oils (such as tea tree oil or chamomile oil) may provide symptomatic relief in mild eczema, likely due to both anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Nevertheless, these studies are typically limited by small sample sizes, lack of standardized preparations, and potential for skin irritation or allergic reactions, which are particularly concerning in individuals with eczema-prone skin.

In summary, while there is some scientific rationale and preclinical evidence supporting the use of terpenoids for eczema, robust clinical trials are lacking. Current evidence justifies a cautious rating of 2/5, and terpenoid use should be approached carefully, ideally under medical supervision.
