Evidence supporting the use of: Amor seco
For the health condition: Edema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Amor seco commonly refers to several plants in the genus Desmodium, most often Desmodium adscendens or Desmodium incanum. In traditional medicine, especially in South American and Caribbean herbal practices, Amor seco has been used for a variety of ailments, including as a diuretic to support the treatment of edema. Folk healers have employed decoctions or infusions of the leaves and aerial parts to promote urination and reduce water retention, which indirectly supports its use for edema. However, scientific studies specifically investigating the efficacy of Amor seco for edema are sparse. A handful of pharmacological papers have documented mild diuretic effects in animal models for related Desmodium species, but these studies are preliminary and do not directly connect to edema management in humans. No substantial clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies have validated its effectiveness in treating edema or fluid overload. Therefore, use of Amor seco for edema is primarily justified by traditional knowledge, with limited scientific support at present.
