Evidence supporting the use of: Baccharoides anthelmintica
For the health condition: Edema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Baccharoides anthelmintica (syn. Vernonia anthelmintica), known as "Kali Jeeri" in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani, has been historically used for a variety of ailments, including edema. The traditional rationale for its use often stems from its presumed diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, which are relevant to the management of edema—a condition characterized by fluid accumulation in tissues. References to its use can be found in classical Ayurvedic texts, where it is described as part of herbal formulations for reducing swelling and water retention. However, while traditional systems have long employed Baccharoides anthelmintica for edema, there is a paucity of modern scientific evidence directly investigating its efficacy for this specific indication. Most available studies focus on its anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, or antioxidant properties, with little direct clinical or preclinical research targeting edema. Thus, while its use is supported by traditional knowledge and ethnomedicinal reports, the overall evidence base remains weak, and scientific validation is lacking. Caution is warranted, and more rigorous pharmacological and clinical studies are needed to substantiate its traditional use for edema.
