Evidence supporting the use of: Boerhavia diffusa
For the health condition: Edema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Boerhavia diffusa, commonly known as "Punarnava," has a longstanding traditional use in Ayurveda and other traditional medicine systems for the treatment of edema (swelling due to fluid accumulation). The primary basis for its use is its reputed diuretic effect, which is believed to help the body remove excess fluids. In recent years, several preclinical and a few clinical studies have investigated the pharmacological properties of Boerhavia diffusa. Scientific research supports some of these traditional claims: studies in animals have demonstrated that extracts of Boerhavia diffusa possess significant diuretic activity, comparable in some experiments to standard pharmaceutical diuretics such as furosemide. Additionally, the plant exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, which may further contribute to its efficacy in managing edema.
Despite promising preclinical results, there are limited well-designed human clinical trials specifically evaluating the effectiveness of Boerhavia diffusa in patients with edema. Most available evidence comes from animal models and in vitro experiments, with only a few small-scale human studies or case reports. Therefore, while there is moderate scientific support for its traditional use and plausible pharmacological mechanisms, the clinical evidence remains preliminary and is not yet robust enough for widespread recommendation outside of traditional practices.
