Evidence supporting the use of: Buchu
For the health condition: Edema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Buchu (Agathosma betulina and related species) is an aromatic plant native to South Africa, where it has been used traditionally by indigenous peoples and later by European settlers for a variety of ailments, including urinary tract issues and as a diuretic. The traditional use of buchu as a treatment for edema (fluid retention) is primarily based on its reputation as a natural diuretic—that is, a substance believed to promote the excretion of excess water and salts from the body through increased urine output. Historical herbal texts from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as ethnobotanical records, reference the use of buchu for "dropsy" (an old term for edema) and related conditions.
However, high-quality scientific studies supporting its efficacy for edema are very limited. Most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional usage. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that certain compounds in buchu, such as diosmin and various volatile oils, may have mild diuretic effects, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Thus, while there is a historical precedent for using buchu to manage edema, its use is not strongly validated by modern scientific research. For this reason, the evidence level is rated as 2 out of 5, reflecting weak but existent traditional and preliminary scientific support. As always, those considering herbal remedies should consult with a healthcare professional, as self-treating edema without medical supervision can be dangerous.
