Dipsacus (commonly known as teasel) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Chinese herbal medicine, where Dipsacus asper and Dipsacus fullonum are referenced. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Dipsacus root (Xu Duan) is used to "tonify the liver and kidneys," strengthen bones, and promote circulation. While there are references to the use of Dipsacus in cases involving swelling or pain—often symptoms associated with trauma or musculoskeletal conditions—direct evidence of its use specifically for edema (fluid accumulation) is limited and largely anecdotal. There is sparse mention in some traditional texts of its potential to "reduce swelling," but its primary indications are not for general edema but rather for localized swelling due to injury.
Scientific research investigating Dipsacus's effectiveness for treating or supporting edema is virtually nonexistent. No robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies directly support its use for this condition. Therefore, the justification for using Dipsacus for edema rests almost entirely on tradition, with very weak and indirect evidence. It should not be considered a validated or evidence-based remedy for edema in modern clinical practice.
