European Golden Rod (Solidago virgaurea) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, particularly as a diuretic and for supporting urinary tract health. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys document its use for promoting urination and "flushing out" the kidneys and bladder, which indirectly supports its traditional application in cases of mild edema (fluid retention). The plant contains saponins, flavonoids, and phenolic glycosides, compounds believed to contribute to its diuretic activity. However, the majority of supporting evidence comes from folk practices and traditional herbal compendia rather than rigorous controlled clinical trials.

Limited preclinical studies and small human trials have suggested that golden rod extracts may increase urine output, but robust, large-scale clinical data specifically evaluating its efficacy for edema are lacking. Official herbal monographs, such as those from the German Commission E and the European Medicines Agency, recognize golden rod as a traditional herbal remedy for flushing the urinary tract and as an adjuvant in minor urinary complaints, but not specifically for edema.
