Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Flavonones, a subclass of flavonoids commonly found in citrus fruits, have received scientific attention for their potential effects on vascular health and edema. Edema, characterized by the accumulation of fluid in tissues, often results from increased capillary permeability or poor venous return. Citrus flavonones such as hesperidin and naringenin have demonstrated biological activities relevant to edema, including capillary-strengthening, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Several clinical studies have explored the efficacy of hesperidin (often combined with diosmin, another flavonoid) in chronic venous insufficiency, a condition frequently associated with edema. For example, randomized controlled trials have shown that micronized purified flavonoid fractions can reduce leg swelling and improve symptoms in patients with chronic venous disorders. The proposed mechanisms include the reduction of capillary permeability, improvement of lymphatic drainage, and modulation of inflammatory pathways.

However, while these findings are promising, most studies have examined combinations of flavonoids rather than isolated flavonones, and methodological quality varies. There is moderate scientific evidence supporting the role of flavonones, especially as part of flavonoid complexes, in managing edema related to venous disorders, but more high-quality, large-scale trials are needed to confirm these effects and clarify the specific contribution of flavonones. Thus, the use of flavonones for supporting edema is scientifically grounded but not definitively established.
