Short Buchu (Agathosma betulina) has a long history of traditional use in South African herbal medicine, particularly for urinary tract conditions and as a diuretic. The leaves have been employed by indigenous peoples, such as the Khoisan, and later by Dutch settlers, to help alleviate symptoms of water retention and to "flush" the urinary system. The rationale for its use in edema (fluid retention) stems from its reported diuretic properties, which can theoretically help the body excrete excess fluid. However, the evidence supporting its efficacy for edema management is largely anecdotal and based on traditional practice rather than rigorous scientific validation. Some early pharmacological studies have suggested a mild diuretic effect from Buchu extracts, but these are limited in scope and quality, and more robust clinical trials are lacking. There are very few, if any, well-designed human studies directly linking Short Buchu to a clinically significant reduction in edema. As such, while traditional herbalists may recommend Short Buchu for edema, modern clinical guidelines do not support its use due to insufficient scientific evidence. Anyone considering its use should consult a healthcare provider, especially since edema can indicate serious underlying conditions requiring medical attention.
