Evidence supporting the use of: Albizia
For the health condition: Emotional Sensitivity
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Albizia julibrissin, commonly known as the "silk tree" or "mimosa tree," has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for emotional well-being, particularly to "calm the spirit" and address symptoms like emotional sensitivity, anxiety, and insomnia. In TCM, the bark (He Huan Pi) and flower (He Huan Hua) are both used as herbal remedies. The flower is said to relieve constraint in the heart and liver, which in TCM theory is associated with mood disturbances, sadness, and irritability. The bark is believed to have calming properties and is used for symptoms such as restlessness and mild depression.
Modern scientific studies on Albizia's effects on emotional sensitivity or mood are limited, and most of the evidence comes from animal studies or in vitro research. Some studies suggest that Albizia extracts may have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) or antidepressant-like effects, potentially related to modulation of neurotransmitters, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while its use is strongly supported by traditional practices, especially in East Asian herbal medicine, scientific validation remains preliminary. The evidence rating is thus moderate for traditional use and low for scientific support, reflecting a need for more rigorous human research.
