Bacopa monnieri, commonly known as bacopa or Brahmi, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, particularly for its cognitive and emotional benefits. Traditionally, bacopa has been utilized as a medhya rasayana—an herbal tonic believed to enhance intellect, memory, and emotional balance. Ancient Ayurvedic texts describe its use to calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and support emotional sensitivity and resilience. The active compounds, called bacosides, are thought to influence neurotransmitter systems, including serotonin and dopamine, which play a role in mood regulation.

Modern scientific research has primarily focused on bacopa's cognitive-enhancing effects, with some studies suggesting mild anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) properties. A few small clinical trials and animal studies indicate that bacopa supplementation may reduce stress and improve mood, possibly by modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and enhancing antioxidant defenses in the brain. However, direct evidence specifically addressing "emotional sensitivity" is limited, and most findings are extrapolated from broader studies on anxiety and mood disorders. Overall, the use of bacopa for emotional sensitivity is rooted in traditional practices, with moderate but not definitive scientific backing for related emotional health benefits.
