Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cyperus rotundus, also known as nutgrass or "mustaka" in Ayurveda, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In these traditions, it is often employed to balance emotional states, particularly to alleviate symptoms related to emotional sensitivity, mood swings, or mild anxiety. In Ayurveda, it is classified as a herb that balances the "Vata" and "Pitta" doshas, which are thought to govern mental and emotional balance. Ancient texts refer to its use in calming the mind, reducing irritability, and promoting a sense of well-being.

However, the scientific evidence supporting these specific uses is minimal. While some pharmacological studies indicate that Cyperus rotundus has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties, there is little direct research on its efficacy in treating emotional sensitivity or mood disorders in humans. A few animal studies have suggested potential anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects, but these findings are preliminary and not yet validated in human clinical trials. Therefore, its use for emotional sensitivity is primarily justified by traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific validation.
